Capitalizing on his military service to advance his political career, Theodore Roosevelt published The Rough Riders as a book in 1899. It became a best- seller and, in turn, inspired popular culture collectibles and games like this one. Even as such games brought the war closer to home, they also revealed the sense of distance between the U.S. home front and foreign battlegrounds by turning deadly warfare into child’s play.
