Kris with Wooden Scabbard

The kris sword is from Mindanao Island and the Sulu archipelago. Captain John J. Pershing is pictured here with a kris. In 1903, Pershing gathered intelligence from forty-eight sultans and datus in Lake Lanao in Mindanao. When some of these leaders refused to give information, Pershing led punitive expeditions against them, including one that killed one hundred and twenty members of the sultan of Bacalod’s household. One of the soldiers who served under Pershing, George C. Shaw, seized this weapon in 1903. Shaw donated this kris to the Smithsonian Institution in 1922.
